For those considering applying to IUOE Local 77 to be an apprentice, the following information will be of value.



Nature of Work:



Members of IUOE Local 77 cover a variety of jobs classifications in industries such as highway and building construction, mining, and utility work such as water and sewer excavation.



Operating Engineers can be found on any project using construction equipment. "Heavy Equipment" is a blanket term for numerous types of machines: Cranes, bulldozers, front end loaders, rollers, backhoes, graders, dredges, hoists, drills, pumps, and compressors are just some of the equipment used by Operating Engineers.



In most cases, if you can push, pull, pump, or lift material, rolls on tires or crawls on tracks like a tank, it falls under the jurisdiction of the IUOE. Operating Engineers take pride in the fact that virtually all construction projects; they are the first workers on the job, and the last off.



Although each member has a favorite type of machinery to operate, Operating Engineers are masters of a variety of equipment. This versatility keeps them employable, since employers' needs vary from project to project.



Heavy Equipment mechanics are also very important contributors on any construction job, requiring a thorough knowledge of many types of equipment. Skilled mechanics are critical because if the equipment isn't running when needed, an entire project can come to a screeching halt.



Below are the qualifications for applying to Operating Engineers Local Union No. 77 in applying please e-mail your name and address to jatc77@gmail.com or mail it to 2114 Fiddler Lane Accokeek, MD 20607. Applications are generally accepted each spring with one class entered per year.



No application will be given at the time of registration unless all qualifications are met as listed on the Qualifications for Apprenticeship Program section.
